Chapter Ten

The next afternoon Mason set the receiver down at the fire station and frowned.

“What’s wrong?” Dave asked, walking in and looking at him.

“Nothing,” Mason said. “The air quality is good over at Chesterfield Estates and the neighboring areas. We can let all of the residents move back in. No danger.” Some of the residents had already moved back, but many of the people in Chesterfield were elderly and had health conditions that made them more susceptible to environmental pollution. It wasn’t recommended for them to return home. And Lexie had been discouraged from going home because of her asthma.

“And this is bad because...?” Dave grinned.

“What are you talking about? It’s great news.” Mason couldn’t make his voice fake the enthusiasm, though.

“Lexie will be thrilled to move out of the Carlyles’ place, I’m sure.”

Mason nodded. “Yeah. I thought I’d run over there and tell her myself.”

Dave shrugged. “It’s slow around here. You should. Try to smile when you break the news to her, though. Make it seem like you’re not depressed about the fact that she won’t be a couple yards from you every day anymore.”

Mason shot him a look. “It’s not like that, and you know it.”

Dave held up his hands. “I don’t know anything. And would it be so bad if it were like that?”

Mason refused to answer that question because the truth was he liked Lexie. More and more every day. “She’s only here for the summer.”

“Plans change. You and I both know it.” Dave’s gaze softened and Mason immediately knew what he was thinking. Things didn’t always work out like we wanted them to.

“Yeah.” Mason headed toward the door. “I’ll see you later tonight.”

Mason climbed into his truck and headed toward Clara and Rick’s house. Lexie’s rental home being available to live in again was good news, he reminded himself. She’d be happy. And they’d still see each other at church and the Teen Center. She was going camping with them this weekend.

He swallowed. Dave was right. His feelings for Lexie had gotten a little deeper than he’d expected. It was only natural. He was a single man and Lexie was as smart as she was pretty, and as nice as she was giving. It didn’t mean that things between them were lasting. She was here for a few more weeks, and that was all. Then life as it’d been before Lexie came to town would return to normal.

“Mason,” Lexie said, standing beside Clara as he pulled in. They were dressed in T-shirts and sweat shorts, with a thin layer of sweat making their faces glow.

“I thought you had to work tonight,” Clara said, pulling a towel to her cheek.

“I do. I am. Are you two exercising?” he asked.

“Walking buddies,” Clara confirmed. “This is day two of Lexie here whipping me into shape.” She laughed jollily.

“Oh, good. Means you’ll still be coming around,” he said, connecting eyes with Lexie. Sweat didn’t detract from her appeal. The guy who’d walked out on marrying her must’ve been blind.
