Chapter Ten
The next afternoon Mason set the receiver down at the fire station and frowned.
âWhatâs wrong?â Dave asked, walking in and looking at him.
âNothing,â Mason said. âThe air quality is good over at Chesterfield Estates and the neighboring areas. We can let all of the residents move back in. No danger.â Some of the residents had already moved back, but many of the people in Chesterfield were elderly and had health conditions that made them more susceptible to environmental pollution. It wasnât recommended for them to return home. And Lexie had been discouraged from going home because of her asthma.
âAnd this is bad because...?â Dave grinned.
âWhat are you talking about? Itâs great news.â Mason couldnât make his voice fake the enthusiasm, though.
âLexie will be thrilled to move out of the Carlylesâ place, Iâm sure.â
Mason nodded. âYeah. I thought Iâd run over there and tell her myself.â
Dave shrugged. âItâs slow around here. You should. Try to smile when you break the news to her, though. Make it seem like youâre not depressed about the fact that she wonât be a couple yards from you every day anymore.â
Mason shot him a look. âItâs not like that, and you know it.â
Dave held up his hands. âI donât know anything. And would it be so bad if it were like that?â
Mason refused to answer that question because the truth was he liked Lexie. More and more every day. âSheâs only here for the summer.â
âPlans change. You and I both know it.â Daveâs gaze softened and Mason immediately knew what he was thinking. Things didnât always work out like we wanted them to.
âYeah.â Mason headed toward the door. âIâll see you later tonight.â
Mason climbed into his truck and headed toward Clara and Rickâs house. Lexieâs rental home being available to live in again was good news, he reminded himself. Sheâd be happy. And theyâd still see each other at church and the Teen Center. She was going camping with them this weekend.
He swallowed. Dave was right. His feelings for Lexie had gotten a little deeper than heâd expected. It was only natural. He was a single man and Lexie was as smart as she was pretty, and as nice as she was giving. It didnât mean that things between them were lasting. She was here for a few more weeks, and that was all. Then life as itâd been before Lexie came to town would return to normal.
âMason,â Lexie said, standing beside Clara as he pulled in. They were dressed in T-shirts and sweat shorts, with a thin layer of sweat making their faces glow.
âI thought you had to work tonight,â Clara said, pulling a towel to her cheek.
âI do. I am. Are you two exercising?â he asked.
âWalking buddies,â Clara confirmed. âThis is day two of Lexie here whipping me into shape.â She laughed jollily.
âOh, good. Means youâll still be coming around,â he said, connecting eyes with Lexie. Sweat didnât detract from her appeal. The guy whoâd walked out on marrying her mustâve been blind.
